- September 9, 2020
‘Community Figure’ is a campaign that aims to celebrate black creators, artist, entrepreneurs, authors, educators and influencers. We have so many amazing people doing great things in our community, but we just don’t hear about them. Each week, we will introduce you to a community figure and their work.
Meet your Community Figure,Zozo Ntokazi Mposula
My name is Zozo Ntokazi Mposula. I am proudly South African and Denmark has been my home for the last 20 years. I am a mother of two. Professionally, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in arts and in education. On a daily basis I work as a school teacher. I am a self taught street photographer, and the co- founder of My Beautiful People. A website dedicated to celebrating the beauty of Africans in the diaspora as well as telling our diverse narratives. I am an avid runner and a yogi. I love sharing my love for movement with other women to stay mentally and physically healthy. I am 42 two years old and love the wisdom and honesty that comes with it.
- Which norms do you see yourself breaking or would you like to see yourself breaking?
I am not sure If I am breaking any norms but if I were to break norms, it would be about black women and men not being monolith. To break the stereotypes by showcasing positive and diverse stories.
- What inspires you to be and do what you do today?
I am inspired by ordinary people and their stories. I am inspired by the youth, their fresh perspective on life, and how they see and navigate racist structures because they know and see what needs to change.
- How do you see the reshaping of the black future?
By creating our table and being the ones setting the agenda, and inviting us to discuss issues that are about us from our own perspective. This is empowering and helps us to control our own narratives. It challenges the white gaze, being othered and taking our power back. I hope it makes sense.
